KBC English Service: Samburu Child Marriages

Child rights advocates have sounded an alarm over an increase in the cases of child marriages in Samburu County, with girls as young as twelve years reported to have become pregnant and married off. Josphine Lengofito, gender and child protection officer with the World Vision says the closure of schools and rescue centres due to the COVID-19 pandemic provided a chance for violators of child rights to marry off young girls. She says as many as 53 girls have undergone female genital mutilation since schools closed in April due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. Marie Yambo reports.
